The study explores how the portrayal of the notion of „Soviet rule” has changed across generations of secondary-school history textbooks published between 1994 and 2024, with particular attention to narratives of occupation, political repression, the Holodomor, and resistance movements. It also examines how key historical terminology, and interpretations have been revised in response to major political developments, including the gaining of independence in 1991, Orange Revolution in 2004, the Revolution of Dignity in 2013, Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the war in eastern part of Ukraine in 2014, and the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.

Methodologically, the study employs qualitative discourse analysis of secondary-school history textbooks published between 1994 and 2024, confirmed by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine. Particular attention is paid to the language used to describe Soviet rule, the representation of historical actors, and the relationship between historical interpretation and civic education.

The study argues that the representation of the Soviet occupation in Ukrainian history textbooks has undergone a profound transformation over the past three decades influenced by the political, geopolitical and social changes. While early post-independence textbooks often reflected inherited Soviet historiographical concepts, more recent editions increasingly present Soviet rule as a form of colonial occupation that undermined Ukrainian sovereignty and identity. This shift illustrates how history education and the course of school history have become an important instrument of post-totalitarian transformation and strengthening democratic resilience in the face of contemporary geopolitical challenges.

Tetiana Ponomarenko (Vytautas Magnus University) Since Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, history education has become an important area for constructing national historical narratives.
