Is it just one of Vilnius’ remote residential districts, a transit point we pass through on our way to and from the capital, an industrial area, or, after all, one of the most important places of memory and symbols of World War II? In my presentation, I discuss the significance of Paneriai for the history of Vilnius (and Europe), reveal the changing meanings of this place from the 19th century to the present: from a romantic place and garden city, to a territory of violence, and to an industrial district and a memorial.
