Library and the Politics of Memory: Ukrainian Dimension

From the perspective of the triad “Memory – Identity – Library”, the presentation reveals libraries of Ukraine’s involvement in the implementation of the politics of memory, considers the introduction of the appropriate course for training of future library specialists, and outlines perspective directions for research of libraries in the politics of memory.

Based on methods of analysis of content, included observation and anonymous survey the obtained results show commemorative potential of library’s memorial, cumulative, informational and communicative functions; emphasise the role of the Ukrainian Library Association and its collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory; highlight the experience and advantages of teaching of the course “Library and the politics of memory” developed with the support of Indiana University for Ukrainian and American students. The course became the first in Ukraine integration of librarianship and Memory Studies. Its effectiveness was proved by the approbation at the Centre for Continuing Library Education of the National Academy of Managerial Staff of Culture and Arts during librarian’s professional development in 2022-2023, as well as during its teaching for students of the School of Information Sciences of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2023-2024.
