Forms of Freedom and Hope in the Lithuanian Diaspora (a few fragments)

Dalia Kuizinienė (Vytautas Magnus University)

Lithuanian diaspora writers and editors of publications were in constant contact with dissident writers and intellectuals from the East and the Middle East, raising issues of freedom for the enslaved peoples. The topic is very broad, so the presentation will focus on  the analysis of several specific cases. 1. Relations between writers and the Santara -Šviesa organisation and the poet, social scientist Czeslaw Milosz (work at the Parliament of the Oppressed European Nations, translations and publications of his poems and articles in the diaspora, participation in Santara -Šviesa congresses), and the editor of the Kultura magazine, Jerzy Giedroyc, (cooperation in a publication he edited, interviews in diasporic periodicals). 2. the activities of the writer and journalist Algirdas Landsbergis in the diaspora (work for the United Nations, Radio Free Europe, activities in the International PEN Club, articles in the US press raising issues of occupation and freedom not only in Lithuania but also in Eastern and Central Europe).

The issue of the occupation of Lithuania has been raised in the Lithuanian diaspora ever since the departure from Lithuania, by all the organisations active in the diaspora, which have devoted a great deal of attention to the liberation of Lithuania. Several examples are chosen for the research of this report, through which it will be attempted to highlight some of the issues of freedom in the Lithuanian diaspora.
