The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania organize the international conference “Children’s and Young Adult’s Reading as Challenge in the 21st Century: Libraries Empower Social Changes 2015” dedicated to the state visit of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia to Lithuania.

Sweden is famous for its exceptional focus on children’s literature: its fostering, reception, promotion and cultural exchange. In Lithuania, awareness of children’s literature is also gaining momentum, and Sweden is considered as an example to be followed: there is an increase in the number of translations of books by Swedish authors into Lithuanian as well as more interest in Sweden’s reading promotion programmes and literature awards and cooperation with researchers and publishers of children’s literature. The conference has the purpose both to celebrate the King’s state visit and initiate close communication as well as share experiences, achievements and ideas between experts of children’s literature, librarians, teachers, publishers, translators and authors from Lithuania and Sweden.
