Humanists originating from the territory of today’s Slovakia and their activities in Bohemia and Moravia in the period before the Battle of Biela Hora. Introduction to the issue, starting points, and theses of the research

Angela Škovierová (Comenius University Bratislava)

During several years of research, we registered a relatively large number of (mostly) Protestant authors originating from Slovakia or those who worked in Slovakia for a long time and published at least one work in one of the Czech or Moravian cities before the Battle of Biela Hora. There was a very diverse group of humanists, among whom we find the clergymen, professors of Charles University, teachers, scribes etc., authors of extensive works in Latin or in the vernacular, patrons or owners of interesting book collections. In the upcoming study, we want to summarise the common characteristics of those personalities and answer the following questions: Who were those personalities? What social environment did they come from? Why did they leave their homeland and work abroad? How successful were they in their new workplace? How did they integrate into the local community of learned people? In which printing offices were their works published? What topics did they deal with? What was their confession?
