For over 20 years, the German Reading Foundation has been harnessing the potential of magazines for literacy promotion. Given the diversity of children and adolescents, the approaches to accessing texts and reading must be equally customised. Magazines provide access to language, writing, short texts, and interesting topics, thus promoting reading in an engaging and enjoyable way.
Around 9.000 classes at secondary and vocational schools receive a total of over 400.000 magazines in every school year.
The presentation first briefly addresses the variety of topics and formats on the German magazine market for children and young people. The project example “Magazines in Schools” is a successful initiative of the German Reading Foundation, which has been giving children and young people access to reading and shows how the collaboration of suitable partners can provide impulses in school educational work and achieve positive learning effects.
