Reading is a basic skill that lays the foundation for the development of other competences. The talk reviews the results of studies of Lithuanian students’ reading performances conducted by international organizations such as OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) and IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievements) on the concept of reading, the influence of the home environment on a child’s reading, connections with parents’ reading, early education, preschool education influence, students’ confidence in their reading abilities.
