Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania is organizing the international conference Libraries Empower Social Changes 2014: Libraries in the European Union Information, Science and Cultural Policy, which will be held on 5 November, 2014 at the Lithuanian Seimas. The conference addresses the changes in the activities of libraries during the first decade of Lithuania’s membership in the European Union by analysing them in the context of pursuing the priorities of the European Union information, science and cultural policy. The event is included in the official list of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of promotional meetings for the 10th anniversary of Lithuania’s accession to the European Union organized by non-governmental organizations and social partners and is partially funded by the European Social Fund Agency (ESFA).

The speakers of the conference represent the European Union member states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, the Netherlands) as well as candidate countries (Turkey) and EU partners (Qatar). The representatives of the local governments and the central government of Lithuania, libraries and their partners are invited to the conference.

It is the second international conference of the same title organized by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and dedicated for the presentation of Lithuanian libraries’ performance in the context of pursuing the EU priorities. On 5 November, 2013, at the Lithuanian Seimas, Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania held an official event celebrating the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union – an international conference Libraries Empower Social Changes: Experiences of the Baltic Sea Region.
